Signature campaign to help mentally challenged persons in Udhagamandalam

Special Correspondent
Udhagamandalam: With efforts made to get mentally challenged persons off the streets going in vain, members of the Udhavum Karangal, the Public Awareness Association of Udhagamandalam and the Centre for Consumer Awareness, Human Rights and Environmental Protection, Gudalur took to the streets on Monday and organised a signature campaign opposite the District Collectorate.

Lamenting that of late the number of mentally challenged persons had increased considerably, the Secretary, Public Awareness Association of Udhagamandalam, G. Janardhanan, said that the objective of the campaign was to enhance awareness among the people about the problem.

Though taking them off the streets would benefit them and the public, nothing tangible had been done till now despite repeated representations, he said.Drug addicts

Stating that practically all the mentally challenged persons had been brought from the plains, he said that the number of drug addicts was also rising. If action was not taken by the authorities concerned, the matter would be taken up with the human rights authorities.
The Secretary, Udhavum Karangal, Suresh Kumar, said that in a popular vacation destination like Ooty such a problem should not be allowed to get out of hand.

The President, Centre for Consumer Awareness, Human Rights and Environmental Protection, S. Sivasubramaniam, said that mentally challenged persons from Karnataka and Kerala were brought by their relatives to Gudalur and abandoned. The issue should be treated with the seriousness it deserves.
